The Maryland Heritage Quilt: Origin and Inspiration
After two years of canceled shows, it was finally decided that the Baltimore Heritage Quilt Guild would move forward and have a real show in April 2023. Pursuant to our tradition, it was also decided that we would make a quilt to raffle off at this new show. That’s an easy decision, but a harder consideration is what the quilt should look like.
We discussed any number of quilt patterns, and then one of our young members suggested that we make a quilt that highlights features of the beautiful state of Maryland. It was such a simple suggestion, and yet it turned out to be the key inspiration for this quilt. A small group of interested members assembled to decide exactly which blocks we would like to include in the quilt, and how we would like to set these blocks. After a relatively brief discussion we came up with the quilt that you see.
We wanted to have a coordinating fabric so we developed kits and thematic ideas and suggestions for each of the 18 blocks. And because we wanted as many members as possible to participate in the development of this quilt, we had members sign up to make each of the blocks pictured on the quilt.
Several industrious members met to assemble these blocks into the quilt which was then passed on to another member, Debbie Riley, for quilting. Marty Vint coordinated this process which, considering the magnitude of the project, moved along extremely quickly and efficiently. Here is a photo of the quilt label, which names the many guild members who participated in making the simple idea come to fruition.
